Fort Nieuw Victoria is one of the forts that witnessed the history of Indonesia’s struggle against the Portuguese. The Portuguese were the first nation to set foot in the Indonesian archipelago, especially in Eastern Indonesia, to be precise in the Ambon area, Maluku province.

The Portuguese came to this area not without reason, in ancient times and even today, Ambon is an area famous for its high-quality spices, so it’s no wonder that many foreign nationals are willing to travel long distances to be able to buy spices from this city.

However, due to the large amount of natural wealth produced by the land of Ambon, foreign nations feel at home for long and even wish to colonize the area. This is evident from the establishment of a fort in Ambon City which was built by the Portuguese in 1575. This fort was named Fort Nieuw Victoria which is also known as Fort Victoria or Fort Kota Laha.

At the beginning of its construction, namely in 1575, Fort Nieuw Victoria was used by the Portuguese government as a storage place for spices they obtained from eastern Indonesia. Over time, this fort changed hands to the Dutch colonialists, because they succeeded in expelling the Portuguese from Ambon land, they used this fort as a base of defense against attacks by the Ambonese people who never tired of trying to destroy and expel them from eastern Indonesia.

However, after independence, the fort was no longer used and began to fall into disrepair. However, a few years later the fort which was a silent witness to the struggle of the Indonesian nation returned to the attention of the Indonesian government.

This fort was finally renovated and underwent restoration so that it can be used as a Historical Tourist Destination which stores various kinds of historical evidence about the struggle of the Ambonese people for independence.
